Description By-issues

Teresa Teng was an influential Taiwanese singer famous throughout Asia and in Chinese communities around the world. She enthusiastically participated in concerts for ROC troops and for overseas Chinese communities, giving performances in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, and Southeast Asian nations, among other places.

She was known as a ¡§patriot performing artist,¡¨ ¡§the military¡¦s sweetheart,¡¨ and ¡§the queen of her generation¡¦s singers.¡¨ A powerful demonstration of musical artistry that resonated with audiences everywhere, her voice comforted countless souls. One of the true superstars of the Asian singing world in the last half of the 20th century, she helped to advance Chinese pop.

On both sides of the Taiwan Strait¡Xand in fact anywhere there are ethnic Chinese¡Xher songs are still popular even today, nearly 20 years after her death. In commemoration of Teresa Teng, Chunghwa Post is issuing a set of four stamps with denominations of NT$5, NT$9, NT$13, and NT$15.

DescriptionBy-issuesThe building that is now the Control Yuan was originally the government building of Taihoku Prefecture. Construction on this historically significant building began in 1913 and was completed in 1915. On April 24 of the same year, a ceremony was held to celebrate its completion. In 1958, it became the offices of the Control Yuan.

In 1998, the ROC government formally designated it as a national historic monument. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Control Yuan building, to celebrate this occasion, Chunghwa Post is issuing a NT$25-denominated stamp featuring this historically significant building.

The designer of the building was Matsunosuke Moriyama, the official architect of the Office of the Governor-General. The building is largely a work of baroque architecture in the Renaissance revival style with various elements taken from different European architectural traditions, including an octastyle portico, saucer domes, a mansard roof, dormer windows, broken pediments, cartouches, and bull¡¦s-eye windows, as well as window and door hoods.

This brick arches-demonstrate architectural panache and contemporary style. The building is an outstanding example of classical architecture.

In keeping with the theme of "Ecology Day" on the second day of the TAIPEI 2015 - 30th Asian International Stamp Exhibition, Chunghwa Post is proud to launch a set of two stamps, themed "Our Ecosystem." The set of stamps is designed with a se-tenant block.

The designs follow:
1. NT$10 stamp: Zengwen River estuary wetlands sit by the mouth of the river, where the waters empty into the sea. The abundance of nutritive salts brought from the upstream area has made the wetlands a habitat for a diversity of wildlife.

The most notable species of all is the black-faced spoonbills. Their long, flat bills bear a striking resemblance to pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. They winter here in the wetlands every October.

2. NT$25 stamp: Sicao wetlands sit at the convergence point of Zengwen River, Luermen River, Yanshui River and Jianan Canal. Large quantities of silt from the upstream area amassed over the years have formed a large plot of tidal land in the Taijiang Inland Sea. The area, with its plentiful food resource, has attracted an impressive array of sandpipers and plovers.

The very leggy black-winged stilts are also the frequent faces here. Within the wetlands is a green tunnel, shade on both sides by mangrove trees, and the view is picture-perfect.

In keeping with the theme of ¡§Family Day¡¨ on the third day (April 26) of the TAIPEI 2015 - 30th Asian International Stamp Exhibition, Chunghwa Post is proud to launch a set of two stamps and a souvenir sheet, themed "Family Comes First," featuring familial interactions between parents and children.

The designs follow:
1. The set of stamps is designed with a horizontal se-tenant block. Between the two stamps is a se-tenant gutter, featuring a heart-shape pattern and a house designed to evoke the image of "30", echoing the theme of ¡§the 30th Asian International Stamp Exhibition".

(1) NT$5 stamp: the parents and the child are enjoying a game of building blocks. Together they create a home castle of love. The design radiates familial warmth and blissfulness.

(2) NT$25 stamp: the parents and the child are riding a tandem bike, the wind carrying their laughter high and far. The blossoming flowers and vibrant birds around them join this concert of familial merriment.

2. Souvenir sheet: the sheet contains two NT$25-dominated stamps. To add to the sheet¡¦s philately worth, the sequence of the two stamps is reversed on the upper and bottom rows, to diagonally face each other.

In keeping with the theme of ¡§Tourism Day¡¨ on the fourth day (April 27) of the TAIPEI 2015 - 30th Asian International Stamp Exhibition, Chunghwa Post is proud to launch a set of two stamps, themed ¡§Invites You to Visit Taiwan¡¨ , featuring the Sky Lantern Festival at Pingxi, and the Vase Rock on Xiao Liuqiu Island. The set of stamps is designed with a horizontal se-tenant block.

The designs follow:

1.NT$12 stamp: The Sky Lantern Festival in New Taipei City¡¦s Pingxi is the most famous Lantern Festival celebration in Northern Taiwan. The event was voted in a Discovery Channel poll as the world¡¦s second grandest nighttime celebration.

As thousands upon thousands of lanterns ascend into the night sky, the points of light are a wonder to behold. The lanterns are invested with prayers and hopes by those who launch them, and images of them in the night sky serve well to market Taiwan.

2. NT$25 stamp: Pintung County¡¦s Xiao Liuqiu is Taiwan¡¦s only coral island. Vase Rock, formed by uplifted coral that has weathered to be thick on top and thin on the bottom, is the most iconic of the island¡¦s rich tourist resources. Resembling a flower vase in shape, the aptly named rock has become a must-see attraction on the island.

In keeping with the theme of ¡§Culture Day¡¨ on the fifth day of the TAIPEI 2015 - 30th Asian International Stamp Exhibition, Chunghwa Post is proud to launch a set of two stamps and a souvenir sheet based on two paintings from the National Palace Museum collection.

The designs follow:
1. Stamp: The set of stamps is designed with a horizontal se-tenant block. Between the two stamps is a se-tenant gutter bearing the stylized image of a hanging scroll rolled in a way to represent the number ¡§30¡¨, echoing the theme of the exhibition.

(1) Literary Gathering, Emperor Huizong (1082-1135), Northern Song dynasty; Hanging scroll (NT$9): The painting is a product of the Painting Academy under Emperor Huizong¡¦s personal direction. It depicts a group of literati drinking and partying in the garden. The table is covered with extravagant dishes and decoration, and several young servants are preparing tea at a small table.

(2) Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden, Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), Yuan dynasty; Hanging scroll (NT$25): This painting depicts a party attended by a celebrated group of Northern Song scholars in the garden of the emperor¡¦s son-in-law, Wang Shen.

The guests at the party gather around Su Shi, Li Gonglin, and Mi Fu, who are writing calligraphy, doing painting, and inscribing a rock. The painting also depicts Chen Jingyuan playing a ruan, a Chinese plucked string instrument, and Liu Jing conversing with Yuantong, a great monk.

2. Souvenir sheet: The sheet includes a se-tenant pair of the stamps mentioned above.

To make it more interesting for collectors, Chunghwa Post is issuing a total of 200,000 sheets of pair souvenir sheet. A stamp folio will be released along with the stamps. It consists of 1 set of stamps, 1 piece of souvenir sheet and 1 piece of pre-cancelled FDC affixed with a complete set of stamps, which is different from the type sold at the counters.

These three items feature the issue. Also included are 1 set of stamps and 1 piece of souvenir sheet featuring Ancient Chinese Painting "Joy in Peacetime" Postage Stamps issued in 1999.
